Of the
hundred or so beaches that I have visited through the Caribbean, the beaches at Punta Cana are the closest to my mental image of a perfect tropical paradise. Soft white sand, palm trees right down to the ocean, turquoise water, warm sunshine and soft breezes. Sounds wonderful, right? It is.
I'll admit that having seen some parts of the Dominican Republic while working for two winters on a Caribbean cruise ship I wasn't really expecting much. What a pleasant
surprise!

And while its beaches are Punta Cana's best feature, the resorts here have much to offer too - perfect for family travellers and anyone looking for a relaxing time in beautiful surroundings.
The food at most of the resorts is
very good - though vegetarians are going to find their choices are limited.
The Dominicans enjoy their meat dishes!
And be prepared to Merengue - the national dance of the Dominican Republic - you'll hear it's rhythm wherever you
go. |
The Punta
Cana/Bavaro area at the south-east tip of the Dominican Republic is pretty, relatively undeveloped and quiet. There's actually not much to do outside of the resorts, so it is worth your while looking for a resort that offers the activities that you and your family are interested in. Punta Cana is not like the
Mayan Riviera with its wealth of activities offered outside the resorts. But if you are looking to relax, swim, and get away from it all for a while it could be the perfect place for you.
Punta Cana is at the higher end of the price bracket for the Dominican Republic, and you can tell why. It's the beaches!
